Researchers pumped tonnes of cement into abandoned ant hill – discovered mega-city underground

Scientists have made an astonishing discovery by pouring enormous amounts of cement into a deserted ant hill, revealing a concealed subterranean city. EarthSky reported that the scientific team was overwhelmed with excitement upon uncovering the remnants of a former ant colony hidden beneath the earth’s surface. Documented in the captivating film “Ants! Nature’s Secret Power,” their mission showcased the mind-boggling intricacies of this underground network.

After weeks of arduous excavation, the scientists unveiled a remarkable structure, once inhabited by ants, which had been shrouded in secrecy.

One can’t help but imagine the potential for a remarkable sequel to Pixar’s “A Bug’s Life” inspired by this incredible find. The labyrinthine tunnels exposed that the ants had painstakingly relocated a staggering 40 tonnes of soil to construct this subterranean marvel.


The narrator of the documentary revealed, “Subterranean highways connect the primary chambers, while branching paths lead to various fungus gardens and waste disposal areas.”

It was further explained that these tunnels were ingeniously designed to ensure efficient ventilation and reduce transportation time by half.

While the city’s design appears to be the work of a single mastermind architect, the narrator clarifies, “This colossal and intricate metropolis was actually the product of collective efforts by the ant colony, functioning as a superorganism.”

As footage showcasing the hidden city emerged on social media, countless individuals were left astounded by this remarkable revelation.

In a study published in the Journal of Biomechanics, a team of researchers discovered that the neck joint of a typical American field ant can endure pressures up to 5,000 times its own weight.

“Ants are truly remarkable mechanical systems—astounding, in fact,” commented Carlos Castro, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at The Ohio State University.

“We initially estimated a conservative capacity for withstanding 1,000 times their weight, but it turned out to be much more impressive than that.”
