Emotional footage shows a 46-year-old elephant taking her very first steps to freedom, after she lived in captivity her entire life. The moment was possible thanks to devoted volunteers at the Wildlife SOS, who had been rescued many other distressed elephants. Now, thanks to their hard efforts, another innocent soul was saved!

Karma had an incredibly tough life so far as she lived in captivity her entire life, and forced to carry heavy loads on the streets of India. Blind and very weak, everything seemed hopeless for this elephant, but fortunately she was finally rescued and taken to the Wildlife SOS Elephant Care and Conservation Center.

The rescue team recorded the moment Karma steps out of the truck they transferred her to the sanctuary. There were her first steps to a new free life!

“Karma experienced her first taste of freedom as she stepped off the ambulance and into the Wildlife SOS elephant hospital,” the team wrote on Facebook. “She is blind and will get a comprehensive medical exam and treatment in the coming days, but you can see her tentatively feel her way step-by-step.”

Karma will remain in the medical unit, until she’ll be strong enough both mentally and physically, to be introduced to the other elephants. But the staff are very positive she’ll soon be ready for that. So far, she’s enjoying each and every moment of freedom, and the volunteers already fell in love with her.

“Because she’s completely blind, we’re taking it slowly as we introduce her to her new life,” the group wrote on Facebook. “She’s such a peaceful elephant and staff has quickly fallen in love with her. It’s hard to imagine how much she suffered just a few short weeks ago before her rescue. Hopefully her memories of abuse will quickly fade.”
