A young Limousin cow escaped from her farm near the Bialowieza Forest in Poland. While her owner was desperately searched her, the rebel cow has been seen well and healthy accompanying a wild herd of bison. The scene was quite surprising to the owner and other people who’ve seen the mismatched herd.
Ornithologist Adam Zbyryt got everyone’s attention after he shared a photo of the cow with her new friends.
As the naturalists in the area said she would eventually return to the farm, the cow decided the bisons are a better company. The fact was confirmed by the bison expert Rafal Kowalczyk at the Mammal Research Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He described the whole situation as an “exceptional” one.
Regarding her health condition, there’s nothing to worry about as the Limousin breed has thick fur and is built for harsh conditions. This helped her to survive into the wild. Even if there’s winter in the Eastern Poland, the mid temperatures in the last years also helped her to survive.
Although the people fell in love with the story, the experts warn the situation is not good for the survival of the endangered European bison species. She’s still young for mating right now, but in an eventually pregnancy the hybrid calf could be a high risk for her own life.
Wild life experts in Poland are planning remove the cow from the herd by summer, but it won’t be an easy task.
“The more time she spends in the herd, the riskier it will be,” Kowalczyk said.
