Their Home Was Burning With Three Dogs Trapped Inside. Then a Stranger Kicked Down the Door

The first sign that something was wrong appeared on a pet camera.

Annabelle, Chewpy and Delilah were moving anxiously through the living room.

Smoke was beginning to spread through the house.

Their family was nowhere nearby.

Jackie McKinney and her relatives were roughly three hours away when an electrical fire broke out at their rural home. Inside were the three dogs: Annabelle, a 4-year-old Old English Sheepdog; Chewpy, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu-Poodle mix; and Delilah, a blind 13-year-old Pit Bull.

None of them had a way to open the door.

So they waited.

The camera captured the dogs looking for an escape

The footage is difficult to watch because the dogs clearly sense that something is changing around them.

Smoke thickens.

They pace.

At times, they gather near the entrance.

But the door stays closed.

Jackie later said it took her a long time before she could bring herself to watch the entire recording.

Knowing what could have happened made the footage almost unbearable.

Then a man suddenly appears.

He had never even met the family

The man was a neighbor who happened to be driving past the property.

He noticed the fire and assumed people could still be inside.

He stopped.

He rushed to the house and knocked on the door.

Nobody answered.

Instead of driving away or waiting outside, he forced the front door open.

The pet camera captured him entering the smoke-filled home and quickly getting the dogs outside.

All three made it out.

The house could not be saved

By the time Jackie and her family returned, the fire had devastated the home.

Furniture, clothing, personal belongings and years of memories were gone.

Reports later described the blaze as electrical in origin, with damaged wiring beneath the deck suspected in the investigation.

But standing outside the destroyed house were the three things that mattered most to Jackie.

Annabelle.

Chewpy.

Delilah.

Veterinarians examined all three dogs after the rescue and found them in good enough condition to return to their family.

Delilah was given five more months

The rescue became even more meaningful because of what happened afterward.

Delilah was already elderly and blind.

About five months after the fire, she died from liver failure related to her age and declining health.

The stranger who stopped beside the burning house could not give her years.

But he gave her family something they almost lost that day:

Five more months.

Five more months of familiar voices.

Five more months of being touched, fed and loved by the people she knew.

Five more months at home with her family.

Everything else could eventually be replaced

Jackie later said the family had lost nearly everything they owned.

But she also came to see the fire in a different way.

Furniture could be replaced.

Clothing could be bought again.

A house could eventually become a home once more.

Annabelle, Chewpy and Delilah could not have been replaced.

The person who saved them did not know their names.

He did not know their family.

He did not even know for certain who was inside.

He saw smoke.

He stopped his car.

He opened a door nobody else was there to open.

And because he did, a family returned to ruins — but not to three empty collars.

Sometimes that is what heroism looks like.

Not someone waiting to be asked.

Just a stranger who notices danger and decides not to keep driving.
