Neglected dog arrived at shelter nearly starved to death — now he’s living his best life

In September, the South Suburban Humane Society in Illinois welcomed a severely emaciated dog named Pumpkin into their care. Initially discovered by a concerned local resident who feared for his life, the dog was brought to the attention of the police.

Describing Pumpkin’s condition as an “extreme case,” Emily Klehm, CEO of the South Suburban Humane Society, revealed that he was found severely emaciated and unable to walk. This heartbreaking situation prompted immediate action to provide the care and attention Pumpkin desperately needed.

Photographs vividly depict the unimaginable thinness of the dog—his survival is nothing short of a miracle.

Veterinarians provided fluids and groomed him, shaving off his matted fur. Despite the challenging beginning, Pumpkin started to show signs of improvement and was placed in foster care with one of the shelter employees.

“Thankfully, we got him into foster care, where he is starting to improve and stand on his own again,” the shelter shared on Facebook. “His journey is still long, but we are incredibly proud of him so far.”

Updates from the shelter reveal the remarkable progress Pumpkin has achieved in a short time. Initially unable to stand, he can now independently walk around the yard, happily wagging his tail.

“This little guy is incredibly resilient and making progress every single day,” the shelter shared.

Although he remains visibly thin, Pumpkin has been gradually putting on weight. “This little guy is progressing, and we cannot wait to see how much more he continues to improve!” South Suburban Humane Society expressed. Pumpkin’s history remains unclear, but the shelter states that he will be available for adoption once he receives medical clearance.

“Pumpkin will need a home that understands that he was severely neglected,” Klehm told Newsweek. “He doesn’t know how to be a dog, so everything from leash walking to toys are all new experiences for him. An experienced dog family would be best.”

In the meantime, Pumpkin is thriving and enjoying his foster home.

It’s heartbreaking to think of Pumpkin’s past neglect, but we’re relieved to see his recovery and weight gain. Wishing him a speedy journey to finding a loving forever home when he’s ready!
