It is an unfortunate reality that animals who look different are often met with hesitation or fear. For Ace the cat, that reality shaped much of his early life.
Ace began as a homeless kitten, surviving on the streets without stability or protection. Eventually, he was rescued and adopted by a caring family who gave him the safety he had never known. However, complications from an infection led to the loss of one of his eyes, giving him an appearance that some people, especially children, find unsettling.
His owners noticed that not everyone felt comfortable approaching him. Because Ace enjoyed spending time outside in the driveway, they installed a home security camera to keep an eye on him and ensure his safety.

Ace’s owner, Norma Maikovich, has spoken openly about how her cat is perceived by strangers.
“He can sometimes seem scary, especially to children,” Norma Maikovich told The Dodo. “People are often hesitant to greet him.”
That hesitation made the boy’s behavior even more meaningful. He saw Ace not as something to fear, but as a friend worth knowing.
Captured by a Camera, Felt by the Heart
Ace frequently rests in the driveway, a spot where he feels comfortable and secure. It was there that the bond between the boy and the cat quietly grew. When Norma reviewed the footage, she was deeply moved by what she saw.
The interactions were gentle and familiar. Ace appeared calm and trusting, while the boy seemed genuinely happy just being there.
“It melted our hearts, not just seeing how much Ace loves this boy, but how familiar they were to each other!” Norma shared. “Sitting by the front door, as soon as Ace sees his friend, he rushes out to greet him. It’s awesome, this bond they share.”
From Stranger to Welcome Guest
Once Norma realized what was happening, she made a decision. The boy no longer needed to quietly slip into the driveway.
He was officially welcome.
“A friend of Ace’s is a friend of ours,” she said. “Once we realized that they were fast friends, it made us really happy.”
Now, the boy can visit openly, knowing he is welcome not just by Ace, but by the family who loves him.
A Quiet Lesson in Compassion
